Kristina Neves proudly displays her national championship trophy at Pond’s Forge in Sheffield.
GUERNSEY has a national swimming champion. Competing at the National Bagcats Championships at Pond’s Forge
in Sheffield, 11-year-old local girl Kristina Neves was crowned the best in her age group in the country.
On the way to the title, the talented Neves won a staggering nine gold medals and set 10 personal-best
times and three new south-east records. She amassed 2,941 Bagcats points, more than 250 ahead of Southport's
Lauren Cheston in second place. Neves took it all in her stride and she said she was not surprised by her success.
She had been spending up to 15 hours a week in the pool in the lead-up to the championships.
Supported by Rothschild Bank International, Neves goes to Crawley to train with coach Tim Hartley in
the Olympic size pool at the K2 Leisure Centre. "Not really [surprised] – I've been training for it," she said.
"It's my first time. It feels good to be national champion."

Bill Green Memorial open castle swim
September 1st
The Bill Green Memorial Open Castle swim took place this year on Wednesday the 29th August starting
at the Gents pool and finishing on the slipway at the Castle, a swim of, approximately, 600metres.
The weather was fine and the sea calm and people started signing on soon after 4.00p.m. For safety reasons
the swimmers were sent of in groups of 50 with numbered caps and checked of at the finish the first group
entered the water just after 5.00p.m. Over 250 people took part this year and the first in each group
received a gift from Colin Fallaize of 2e2 who sponsored this event by providing caps, lovely certificates
for all and transport for bags if required. The trophy for the oldest competitor was again presented to
Bernie Savage at the end of the swim.
Many swimmers had taken their time and came out saying what an enjoyable swim it had
been so we hope we will see you again next year.
Entry was by donation which this year is going to the Maison Million Appeal for the building
of residential homes for Alzheimer patients and a total of £1000 was raised.
Well done and thank you to all who took part and also to our sponsors 2e2 for all your help.
You can visit 2e2 here.
