Swimming galas (also often called Meets) are usually run according to rules set out by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). These galas take various forms. In our club we are involved in different types, the main ones of which are: Internal galas e.g. the Club Championships, Development Galas Closed galas e.g. the Island Championships, Channel Island Championships The League galas e.g. the Speedo League Junior Cup Annual Junior Meet 4 Way Meet The County/District Championships e.g. the Hampshire County Championships and the South East Regional Championships The National Championships Open Galas - Licensed Meets Internal Galas Club Championships Ages for these are the swimmers age on the last day of the year (December 31). These are open to every member in the club, although parents of our really young swimmers (under 8s) must consult with their childs coach before the children are entered for these. Entry for the club 100 and 200 championships is automatic for our competitive 8years + All other club championships (distances 400/800/1500 states cup) is by entry forms available at the club office approximately 6 weeks prior to diary date PLEASE ensure that forms are returned by the closing date as NO LATE ENTRIES will be accepted. For small pool galas i.e. Porpoise, Puffin and Julius Bar Galas are also by entry form and the same rules apply as for club distance galas. There are no entry fees for club only galas but the GSC reserves the right to refuse swimmers who have not paid their terms swimming fees. Closed Galas Ages for these are the swimmers age on the day of the competition. These are for swimmers aged 8 years +. The distances and strokes swam may vary from gala to gala. This is again by entry form and entry fees must be paid when the entry form is handed in again No late entries will be accepted. League Galas Speedo League Junior Cup Annual Junior Meet 4 Way Meet The club sends a team to these, and the team that goes (and they often differ from league gala to league gala) will normally consist of both boys and girls of all age groups above 8 years old. Entry into these is by invitation and selection by the Coaches. There is no entry fee for these. In selecting a team, consideration is often given to times achieved by swimmers in the Club Championships, the Open Meets (see below) and internal time trials. County and District Championships Hampshire County Championships usually take place over 3 weekends in February/ March and are open to all swimmers who will be 9 by a specified date in March of the year of the competition (for 2008, the date was 17 March) and who have achieved the required qualifying time for the event they wish to enter. Submitted times must have been achieved since 1 June of the previous year. District Championships South East Region are open to all swimmers above the age of 10 who have achieved a time faster than the stated time for the race that the swimmer is interested in at County Championships on at a Licensed Gala (details to follow). There are two time levels: AUTOMATIC Qualifying times swimmers achieving these times are guaranteed entry to the event. BASE Level Qualifying times swimmers achieving these times are eligible to enter but will only be accepted where there is space in the event. These Championships are divided into South East Regional BAGCATS (Age Groups): - Boys 10 14 years and Girls 10 13 Years which takes place over two weekends in early June (2006 - 3rd & 4th /10th & 11th June) Age as at the last day of the Championships, and South East Regional Youths: - Boys aged 15 and over and Girls 14 and over which takes place over the May Bank holiday weekend (2006 29th April to 1 May) Age as at last day of Championships. National Championships Our Head Coach, Jo Winberg, has responsibility here entries dealt with by Chris Butt. These are open to swimmers who have achieved the required qualifying time for the event they which to compete at a Level 1 or 2 Licensed Meet (held between 1 October and 31 May), or in the County championships (February to March), or in the District championships (May/June). These are divided in to British Age Group Category (BAGCATS) National championships for 11-14 year old boys, and 11-13 year old girls; and the Youth championships for 15-18 year old boys and 14-17 year old girls. Ages are usually as at one of the first 5 days of August. Open Galas/License Meets These galas are usually open to swimmers who are at least 8 years old at the date of the gala. These are designated (licensed by the ASA as a level 1, 2, or 3) Level 3 is the lowest level, and times achieved at these can, subject to the swimmer meeting the qualifying times, be used to enter County and District championships. Level 2 is the next level up, whilst Level 1 Meets are the most challenging. Times achieved in the levels 1 and 2 Meets can, subject to the swimmer meeting the qualifying times, be used to enter County, District and National championships. Level 3 Meets tend to state a time that the swimmer must not have swum faster than (an Upper Limit). Level 2 Meets tend to specify an Upper Limit, and also, a lower one i.e. the swimmer must have swum faster than the Lower Limit times. Level 1 Meets just specify Lower Limit times i.e. the swimmer must have swum faster in order to enter. Some Level 3 Meets give speeding tickets to swimmers who swim faster than the stated times. Each organiser of a gala will state what level it is and what times you need to have met. These can vary between organizers even at the same gala level. Not all entries are accepted as these galas are generally very popular and the organizer will then accept the fastest swimmers in each age band and the others will be rejected and their entry money returned. General Competitors put themselves forward by choosing which event they wish to enter. Swimmers complete the entry form that we give out and they pay the required entry fee plus . Entry Cards: once the club receives them (usually 2 weeks before the event), we will give these to the swimmers. The cards are the tickets that the swimmer will need in order to compete in the event. The cards must be taken and posted by the swimmer in the appropriate box by the time stated by the organiser usually immediately before the beginning of the swimming session. More Meets are being run on a cardless system these days. With such Meets, the swimmers have to enter for the races as above, be accepted for them, and then sign in for the swims they wish to compete in on the day. Each event will be divided into heats. The winner is decided either on times (Heat Declared Winner/HDW) or a final when the fastest 6 or 8 competitors will swim off for places. Medals are usually awarded at these events, for either the top three 1st, 2nd and 3rd or six/eight swimmers i.e. all the finalists get something. Remember to take enough towels and costumes. Being wet/cold will not help a swimmer swim their best. Make sure the swimmer has a drink for replacing lost fluids during races. Anything from water to sports drinks will do. The clubs swimming hats, trunks, costumes, polo-shirts, tracksuits, goggles, bags etc can be bought from the club shop. Club Endorsed Galas If the club endorses attendance at a gala, one of our Coaches will be in attendance at the gala. You will be able to tell these galas because we will invite swimmers to enter for the gala on a form bearing the clubs logo We appreciate however, that it is up to parents/swimmers to manage each swimmers career, and that a swimmer might wish to attend a gala which is not endorsed by the club. In such situations, the club will have no responsibility towards such a swimmer, and responsibility will lie fully with the parents/guardian of the swimmer in question and all cost will be met by the swimmer. Our Head Coach strongly recommends that gala entries are always discussed with a swimmers Coach first. The ASA has recommended that swimmers should not over-compete. More than 12 competitions a year is seen to be excessive by the ASA especially where the competitions interrupt swimmers structured training. You should now be aware of all the different Galas that you will be swimming in by reading USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT SWIMMING MEETS/GALAS The helpers in the club office or the competition secretary (Chris Butt) will help you fill in the entry forms. Here we have tried to put together in a simple and logical order the processes that you will go through entering your first OPEN MEET ENTERING AN OPEN MEET: Information will be given to swimmers re: events, age groups, days & dates of the competition. Enter all events that you can qualify for and not just youre favourite as you get older you will find that youre strokes change and specialising in one event will not happen until you are much older. Entries to Chris Butt by 17th October 2006 Place cheque in envelope payable to Guernsey Swimming Club LBG with your entry form. And give it to Your Coach or the Competition Secretary or post it in the GSC offices letterbox at Beau Sejour Remember YOUR COMPETITION SECRETARY IS THERE TO HELP YOU THE MEET: If the organisers of the meet receive a large amount of entries, the slowest competitors from some events will be rejected and your entry will be returned remember keep training hard and you will have a better chance on getting into the next open. Swimmers will then receive cards back from the organisers. Usually blue for boys and pink for girls. Some competitions run a card less system so you do not receive any cards if you do not receive any cards, check with the Gala secretary and He/She will confirm whether it is card less or not Information on the cards will be: Swimmers name, club, event & competitor number, entry time, session number, warm-up time, start time, and the most important of all, post cards by (time). ON THE DAY: Before leaving home make sure you have your kit, 2 towels, 2 or 3 costumes/trunks GSC swimming hat, plenty of drink (very important) a couple pairs of goggles tightened ready to wear, snacks for poolside preferably not chocolate, on the poolside you will need your GSC T-shirts, leggings or shorts and poolside shoes. AND YOUR CARDS Always arrive in plenty of time, to post your cards or sign in Boxes for cards or signing in sheets are usually situated by the entrance to the pool or by the changing rooms, if you cannot find them, ASK someone. If you forget to take your cards tell the organisers and you will be issued with cards, you will need to write them yourself. What to do if you miss posting your cards or forget to sign in? Tell your GSC helper or Coach, who will then take you to the organisers, (if the coach is busy she may ask you to do this with a GSC helper). If the events have already been sorted out and there is a space in the first heat you will normally be offered that space. If there are no spaces you will not be able to swim that event. If the event has not been sorted, your card will be placed in the correct order. This is all at the discretion of the organisers. Your best approach is not to forget to post your cards or sign in. Oh and also you are not allowed to post anybody elses cards or sign in for anybody else WHAT NEXT: Get yourself changed and go onto the poolside. You will need to look for the Guernsey swimming Club poolside helpers and the rest of the GSC Team. Dont worry just keep looking, you will find them eventually. Report to the Poolside helper and tell him/her who you are, you must not leave the poolside without informing them either. Keep calm and save your energy bring something to do or read The helpers will organise you for warm-up and tell you when your swim is coming up. Keep an eye on what is going on and cheer all the GSC swimmers during their swims and they will cheer for you. YOUR SWIM: The announcer will call your event usually 2 events before you swim; the Helpers will send you to a marshalling area. Do not wander off or mess about you, need to pay attention to everything thats going on. Your card will either have been given back to you before you enter the marshalling area or you may have to look for it on a table or filing trays. If its a card less Gala you wont have any cards the marshals will put you into the right order and tell you your laneDont worry there will be adults there marshalling you. If you are worried ASK. Sometimes there will be an experienced swimmer with you to show you the ropes, dont worry youll soon get the hang of it. The marshals will then call your heat and send you to your blocks, your heat and lane number will be written on your card or you have been told dont worry if you have forgot keep calm the chief time keeper will help you. Go to your lane there is usually a box or basket to put your pool shoes T-shirt and drinks bottle in so you can collect it at the end of your race GET READY GET YOUR GOGGLES ON ONCE YOU ARE ON YOUR BLOCKS AFTER ALL THOSE HOURS OF TRAINING NOBODY ELSE MATTERS, SWIM AS FAST AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN, DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO LOOK AROUND. Sometimes your swimming does not go as well as you expect, do not worry there is often a good reason for that, do not get upset, put that swim behind you learn from it and concentrate on the next one. Collect your T-shirt and other belongings from the box or basket remember to stand still when the next race is about to start then go back to your team and wait for your next race, never walk in front of the timekeepers or judges during races DONT FORGET YOU ARE AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE GSC GOOD LUCK PAGE 6 I , k { 5 m n ~ Wv|~@ABOƾƶƮƾƮƾƞƮƮƮƲƲƲƲphM hhd5B*CJ\phhM hhM h>*B*phhM hhM hhd>*B*phhM hhd5B*CJ\phhz!haNhaNB*phhdB*phhd!hd5B*CJOJQJ\phhz!hd5B*CJ\ph3f'hz!hz!5B*CJOJQJ\ph3f*I k 5 Q m n } ~ ABO \ ^\ `gdz!$a$AAO\<CDHQRTvwM"#ǿuqq^YYYY hdH*$hM hhd56>*B*\]phh/ hM hhd5>*B*\phhM hh/ 5>*B*\ph(h/ h/ 56>*B*CJ\]ph(hM hhd56>*B*CJ\]phh/ B* phhdB* phhM hhdhaNhM hhd5B*\phhM hhaNB*phhM hhdB*ph"LMNOPQRSTvwr:;Oab{|},6abz{|}S n """######*%Ϻ~v~v~vk~a~a~a~hdB* H*phhd5B* \phhguB* phhdB* ph"hd56>*B*CJ\]ph h/ >* hd>* hd5\!hM hhd56B*\]ph(hM hhd56>*B*CJ\]ph hd>*CJh/ h/ 5\(hM hhd56>*B*CJ\]phhd hdH*#p< """>$$%%%%%&(v(((K)L)*%J%M%N%S%[%t%%%%%%v((((G)K)L)))*****1,2,̾﬚|xhYxOhd5B*ph!hd6>*B*CJ]ph!hd56>*B*CJ]ph!hdhguB* phhd5B* \phhgu5B* \ph#hguhgu5B* CJ\aJph#hguhd5B* CJ\aJphhd56B*\]ph$hM hhd56>*B*\]phhdB*phhKB* phhdB* phhM hB* phL)))****,1,2,3,4,?,@,y,z,,,,,,,,,,,,,$If 9r $a$2,4,<,?,@,K,T,o,w,,,,,--"-5-l-n----..'.}.~..../ / //?/P/U/Y////µ¨œµœ¨¨¨œtplplphphvhhguhdhdCJH*OJQJ^JhdCJOJPJQJ^Jhgu5CJOJQJ^JhguCJOJQJ^Jhd>*CJOJQJ^Jhgu>*CJOJQJ^JhdCJOJQJ^JhdB*ph!hd6>*B*]ph!hd56>*B*]ph!hM h56>*B*]ph!(,,,,,,,,6-7-@-F-Q-Z-`-k- 9Ff$Ifk-l-n-v-|-}-@3---$If $If[$\$kd$$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la}-~------:kd$$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la$If-------:kd$$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la$If-------:kd$$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la$If-------:kd$$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la$If-------$If-------@:::::$Ifkd$$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la-------:kdz $$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la$If-----.:88kdu $$Iflֈ 9Q 064 la$If.'.V.X.}.~.....///r///00)0*0"1$111L2M2 $&dPa$ &dP[$\$///////000)0M2p22 3 3 33333 3S3s3)4-4_4m4o4p44495<5=55 666k6l6n66y8}uhdB*ph hthd5B*CJaJphhdB*phhd5B*mH phsH htmH sH hdmH sH hM h56>*B*]ph!hd5B*phhd5B*phhd56>*B*]ph!hd56>*B*CJ]ph!hvhhdhgu+M2p2q2 33333 3o4p444G5H555 6 667w8y888[9:::$a$y8888889999:::::::a;;;;;;<<====== ?!?ṱ᠒vlgU#hthd5B*CJ\aJph hd5hd5B*phhd5B*phhKhM h5B*CJaJphhxuM5B*CJaJph hthd5B*CJaJphhd6>*]hd56>*B*]ph!hdB*phhd>*B*phhthguhdhd5B*\ph!hd56>*B*\]ph! :::`;a;;;==== ? ?)????@@@AAAAAAA$hdd[$\$^ha$$a$!?"????m@n@@@@@*B*ph4 @24 Footer 9r .)@A.
